Book Week 2015

Piper came to the car crying after school on Tuesday.  She had a note to say that it was Book Week on Wednesday (the next day) and they could dress up.

Nooo!!!

I had read the notes that came home to say that Book Week was on 26 August, but for some reason I kept thinking that it was in the last week of the term, which is a few weeks away.

Piper wanted to go as Violet from The Incredibles and I felt like the worst Mum in the world.  I knew that it was going to be a moment in her beautiful life that she would remember forever, be it good or bad.

If she didn't go as Violet, it would be bad and remembered as the day that her Mum let her down.  If she did go as Violet, it would be one of her happy memories because her Mum made her a costume of what she wanted at the very last minute.

That afternoon we raced to three different toy shops, but no one had a Violet costume.  I decided then that I was going to make it. I'm not a fan of the polyester that kids costumes are made out of anyway, but finding red tights and a red long sleeve top at 4:45pm on  Tuesday afternoon felt impossible.
I could not find red tights anywhere, but after a quick prayer to God, I did find two red t-shirts on the $1 table in Big W, some long black socks (for boots) in the sock section and some netball nickers in the school uniform section.  Thank you God!!! You're the best!!

One of the shirts, I used as a shirt. I cut The Incredibles logo out of felt and glued it on with a hot glue gun. It looks terrible, but Piper was happy and my need for perfection was not more important than her happiness (in this case).  The other shirt, I cut up and made into tights.  I had piper put her legs into the arms, pinned the body (of the shirt) up, sewed it together and cut off the excess fabric.  They are far from perfect, but when you pull the black netball nickers up over them, you can't tell. All I had to do now was the headband and mask. The headband I made by wrapping orange ribbon around one of girls old headbands and the mask was cut out of left over felt.

They're not the best photos, but the little girl in them is happy and that's all the matters to me.
